Power outlets, plugs and voltage in Japan
Japan’s electricity has two quirks worth knowing before you pack a charger or ship an appliance: the voltage is a low 100V, and the country is split into two frequency zones. This guide sticks to what official sources — Japan’s tourism body (JNTO) and the utility KEPCO — actually state.
Voltage: 100V everywhere

KEPCO confirms the same base figure: “Although 200V has been implemented for some appliances, basically the voltage in Japan is 100V.” That 100V is lower than North America’s 120V and far below the 220–240V used in Europe, the UK and Australia — which is why a non-dual-voltage appliance from those regions can underperform or fail here.
The plug shape
Japanese sockets take a plug with two flat parallel pins (the same physical style used in North America). If your plug is a different shape, you need a conversion plug adapter — a cheap, passive part that changes the shape only, not the voltage. Frequency: 50Hz east, 60Hz west
“There are two kinds of frequencies in use—50 Hertz in eastern Japan and 60 Hertz in western Japan (including Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka).” (JNTO)
Where exactly does it switch? KEPCO pins down the boundary:
“The electric frequency is different on either side of the Fujigawa River in Shizuoka Prefecture and Itoigawa City in Niigata Prefecture, with 50Hz in the east and 60Hz in the west.” (KEPCO)
For most travellers the frequency is irrelevant — phones, laptops and cameras don’t care. It matters for movers, below.
Will your devices work? Adapter vs transformer
The deciding factor is whether your appliance is dual-voltage.
“Certain types of electrical appliances such as dual-voltage hair dryers, travel irons and shavers should work wherever you are in Japan.” (JNTO)
“However, in other cases, a step-down transformer is required to convert the voltage.” (JNTO)
- Dual-voltage device (most phone/laptop chargers, many travel gadgets): just a plug adapter. Check the label for a range like
100–240V. - Single-voltage device rated only for, say, 230V: you need a step-down transformer, which is bulkier and rated by wattage.
Where to buy either:
“In urban areas, it is relatively easy to find devices such as conversion plugs and transformers. They are sold in electronics quarters such as Tokyo’s Akihabara and Osaka’s Nipponbashi, or at major home appliance mass retailers such as Yodobashi Camera or Bic Camera.” (JNTO)
For movers & long-stay residents: the frequency trap
If you carry appliances across the 50/60Hz line (or buy second-hand from the other region), KEPCO groups the risk into three tiers:

KEPCO adds these are “general examples… There are exceptions, so it is best to check the operating manual or consult with the manufacturer directly.” Also note: “the plug sockets for 100V and 200V are different in shapes,” so a 200V appliance won’t fit a standard 100V outlet.

What voltage does Japan use?
A uniform 100 volts AC nationwide, per Japan’s national tourism organization (JNTO) and confirmed by the utility KEPCO. That is lower than North America (120V) and much lower than Europe/Australia (220–240V).
Is Japan 50Hz or 60Hz?

I’m moving within Japan — does the 50/60Hz split matter?
For some appliances, yes. KEPCO warns that washing machines, microwave ovens, non-inverter fluorescent lights and clothes dryers may not work at all if carried across the 50Hz/60Hz boundary, while fridges, fans and air-conditioners work but less efficiently. Also note 100V and 200V outlets have physically different shapes.
